I’m back from New Zealand! I have well over 2000 pictures from the trip, so this blog will be busy over the next few weeks. There were three major highlights to the trip – the Routeburn trail, a caving trip in Waitomo, and kayaking the Kaituna river. I have photo/video from all of those and more, but the annual whitewater kayak club holiday party is tomorrow, so the kayaking video was given rush treatment:
The river is class III-IV, with two notable drops – Powerhouse rapid, and Okere Falls, a 7 meter drop. This was filmed on a GoPro HD (60 fps), with a few shots from a Canon 5d Mark II. Edited in 24p, so I was able to slow the gopro footage down to 40% speed at times. The 5d was being operated for me by someone who’d never seen a dslr before, so it autofocused on a tree 20 feet away instead of the waterfall 200 feet away. As a result the footage is a bit iffy, but it gets the point across.
This river was incredible, I’d highly recommend paddling it (or rafting if you don’t paddle). I’d also highly recommend my guide, Sam from Kaituna Kayaks. Check him out on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/user/samkaituna
